How do you know which trip is right for you? The experts here at the Jasper Rafting Alliance can help you decide.

Rivers and rapids are rated on an international scale which ranges from the easiest Class 1 to the near impossible Class 6. As the numbers get higher the difficulty and excitement increase. Our goal is to provide our guests with the most enjoyable rafting experience possible.

Class I: Relaxing!

Gentle, moving water. Very small waves requiring little or no maneuvering.

Class II: You might get splashed.

Regular waves, easy to see, may reach 3 to 4 feet in height. Avoiding rocks, river bends or other obstacles may require simple maneuvering.

Class III: You will get wet!

Large, continuous series or sets of waves, some in excess of 6 feet. “Holes” or “hydraulics” may be present, and can be run or avoided. Small drops, ledges or waterfalls may be present. Scouting the rapids is suggested for all but the most experienced of Canadian rafters.

Class IV: You will get soaked!

Confused and erratic waves or holes. Large obstructions need to be avoided in what are referred to as “must moves.” Risk of injury if swimming without benefit of a raft! Very difficult and scouting is required.

Class V: Adrenaline junkies only!

High risk of capsize or injury. For most people, Class V goes off the “fun” scale and enters the “kinda scary” scale! Very challenging for even the most experienced whitewater rafter. Limit of navigation and scouting is essential.

Class VI: Niagara Falls in a barrel.

Virtually non-navigable, or navigable only at particularly favorable river levels. Only for the most experienced rafters.

With this in mind, the following chart will help you decide which of the trips we offer is right for you and your family.

Experience White Water Rafting at Night on the Kakwa River!

ALBERTA, Canada – The Jasper Rafting Alliance’s approved outfitters offer two great overnight adventures that combine whitewater rafting and camping in Alberta, Canada. A two day, one night whitewater rafting adventure on the Class 2 Athabasca River is great for families and beginners. Utilizing a public, road accessible campsite, this trip is an excellent introduction to camping and rafting without the risks of wilderness travel in Jasper. And for a great rafting experience, try the Kakwa 3-day adventure. The Kakwa River is a tributary of the Smoky River and flows from the Canadian Rockies into the Alberta foothills. Once home to the Beaver and Sekani Indian tribes, and later the fur trading Iroquois, the Kakwa today is uninhabited and rarely traveled.

If three days of wilderness camping, delicious meals, ample wildlife and Class 4 whitewater rapids are what you’re looking for, then get ready for a great trip. Transportation to and from Jasper is generally provided for our overnight trips, as well as food, camping, river and safety equipment.

Kakwa River – Class 4 Three-Day Wilderness Adventure Details:

Minimum 6 people required

Minimum age is 13 years old

The cost is $599 per person

Departures are Fridays from May 15 to July 1

All equipment and transportation included
